Introduction
The Investment Stewardship (IS) function within Temasek is accountable for various aspects of the exercise of rights and responsibilities that come with owning securities in our investees. It involves engaging with the investee’s management and board of directors on various issues that may affect the long-term value and performance of the company, such as strategy, governance, risk management, environmental, social, and governance (ESG) factors, and capital allocation.
Responsibilities
- Formulate and refine the investment stewardship strategy, as well as, lead the execution of the work plan to advocate for good corporate governance practices, expand investors’ engagements, and enhance our engagement model with portfolio companies.
- Develop strong professional networks and track best practices and emerging corporate governance trends to better advise Temasek and assess our portfolio companies vs. market landscape.
- Maintain our voting policy, guidelines and escalation processes to ensure Temasek’s interest is protected and our vote is exercised effectively.
- Conduct training and capacity building for the investment teams on the topic of investment stewardship (including voting practices)
- Collaborate with other teams to extract market insights from market participants, distill implications to portfolio companies’ communication strategies, and ideate value-creation opportunities for our portfolio companies.
- Continuously engage and coalesce internal stakeholders’ subject matter expertise to drive a whole of Temasek effort in effective portfolio company engagement.
Requirements
- A bachelor's degree in law, business, finance, or a related field.
- A minimum of 10 years of experience in corporate governance, legal, or investing/asset management roles.
- Strong knowledge of the corporate governance codes, regulations, and standards in Asia, America and Europe (including proxy advisor practices and guidelines) is preferred. Investment experience and a keen understanding of financial markets will also be viewed favourably.
- Strong verbal and written communication skills, including the ability to synthesize complex information and convey it in a clear and concise manner to senior-level audiences.
- Ability to demonstrate strategic vision and high attention to detail.
- Ability to work independently and collaboratively with various stakeholders. Familiarity with managing voting systems.
