Introduction

The Emerging Technologies (ET) team mandate is to invest in deep-tech innovation and development opportunities, which have the potential to drive inflection in existing industries or create completely new markets. The ET team leverages its science and technology domain expertise, global reach, investment acumen, partnership mindset and business development capabilities to invest in early-stage deep tech start-ups which have a fundamental and differentiated techno-economic entitlement to outperform and deliver outsized returns. Within this mandate, the team aims to curate and build growth enterprises leveraging deep tech platforms with globally competitive partners, with the aspiration to create global category leaders in strategically important industries which will be part of Temasek’s future core portfolio.

The candidate will be part of the team originating, developing and building emerging technology platforms. He/she should have a strong drive, sense of purpose, capacity to learn quickly, be able to concurrently lead cross-functional teams, collaborate across different teams/businesses and is well grounded in science, engineering and/or technology on first principles basis. 
 

Responsibilities

  • Ideate and execute ET team platform building and multi-modality investment strategies.
  • Originate and assess investment opportunities as well as manage investment process from start to end.
  • Perform market and technology research to identify global investment opportunities in deep-tech which includes areas in 1) Compute, Cognition & Embodied AI (CCE) and 2) Materials & Energy Technologies (MET). CCE would be a priority.
  • Develop deep-tech domain expertise to evaluate technologies currently under development from a first principles perspective, to evaluate potential commercial success in future markets and applications. 
  • Engage all the relevant key investment and technology stakeholders within selected focus area(s) under ET’s coverage.
  • Create and execute the business case for new opportunities, develop the value proposition/business plan and build detailed financial analysis for these opportunities.
  • Perform techno-economics analysis, financial analysis, technology & competitive benchmarking, and due diligence on target companies. 
  • Build investment theses, financial models and prepare investment memorandums.
  • Execute investment transactions including legal diligence and investment documents. 
  • Regular monitoring of portfolio companies technical, product and commercial performance.  
  • Manage functional processes for investment, pipeline management, portfolio oversight, investee performance reporting and reviews.

Requirements

  • Undergraduate or post-graduate degree in science, technology, engineering or mathematics (STEM) disciplines. PhD and/or MBA would be viewed favorably. 
  • 5 - 10 years in R&D, product development, tech strategy formulation and business development roles in globally competitive tech enterprises or multinational companies, deep tech VCs and private equity firms. 50% of work experience should be investing.
  • Financial modelling skills would be advantageous.
  • Proven capability to build new businesses from inception and drive towards successful outcomes.
  • Keen analytical skills and the ability to glean insights from technical, commercial and financial data.
  • Ability to multi-task and lead in a dynamic and complex operating and regulatory environment. 
  • Possess high level of interpersonal communications skills, presentation and learning agility. 
  • Able to work well cross-functionally, as part of different teams and with multiple stakeholders. 

 

Salary Range: Base salary of US$120K – US$270K per annum (compensation structure includes various additional incentives payable in April, August and October annually)
