SUSTAINABILITY GROUP
At Temasek, sustainability is at the core of everything we do – from our mandate to deliver sustainable value over the long term, to our strategy of how we operate as an institution, shape over portfolio, and engage our portfolio companies to build sustainable businesses.
In partnership with various teams across Temasek and our broader ecosystem, the Sustainability Group initiates, develops and implements strategies to build a climate-resilient, net zero portfolio to enable nature positive and inclusive growth; catalyses new business opportunities and solutions that contribute to sustainable development; advances thought leadership and engagement on sustainability topics; and supports our growth as a sustainable organisation to create shared value aligned with our mandate of generating sustainable returns over the long term.
The Sustainability Group comprises of the following sub-teams and partners with the investment group and functional teams to strengthen our sustainability capabilities and ecosystem.
- Sustainability Strategy: advance our strategy and policy towards net zero, nature positive, and inclusive growth and drive institutional and community-related sustainability initiatives.
- Sustainable Solutions: drive decarbonisation in portfolio companies and unlock new investment opportunities in Sustainable Living trends by identifying emerging thematics and catalysing innovative solutions
- ESG Investment Management: advance ESG integration across our investment process including portfolio engagement to help strengthen long-term portfolio resiliency and value creation
- Ecosperity: accelerate systems-change by harnessing our Ecosperity platform to drive year-round engagements, thought leadership, and advocacy
Introduction
Sustainable Solutions: drive sustainability in portfolio companies (including decarbonisation and water consumption) and unlock new opportunities in Sustainable Living trends by identifying emerging thematics and catalysing innovative solutions
This involves:
- Catalysing decarbonisation solutions that will accelerate the decarbonisation of Temasek’s portfolio in alignment with Temasek 2030 and 2050 portfolio decarbonisation targets, and
- Focusing on technology sectors that have an outsize impact on Temasek’s total portfolio emissions, including low-carbon energy solutions – such as hydrogen, fusion and fission energy, and advanced geothermal energy – advanced biofuels and e-fuels for applications in maritime and aviation, electrification of heavy industry, data centres and cooling efficiency improvements, and water solutions.
Responsibilities
The Sustainable Solutions team seeks interns that are highly passionate about decarbonization, knowledgeable about clean energy and water technologies and/or markets and driven by a strong work ethic. Successful candidates will support this small, nimble team in a variety of job functions and can expect to gain exposure to cutting edge technology development while working with a global set of stakeholders. Responsibilities include:
- Support the team to catalyse solutions to decarbonise the Temasek portfolio in multiple clean energy and water sectors, including deploying capital and solutions. Solutions will largely focus on technology innovation, but may also include ecosystem enabling initiatives, and/or policy and regulation proposals.
- Research and analyse new technology areas focusing on decarbonisation trends, policy and regulatory developments, market and commercial drivers to distil actionable insights for the wider Temasek Ecosystem
- Engage team stakeholders to validate problem statements (as needed)
Requirements
- Pursuing a degree in science, engineering, business, and finance are highly preferred. Advanced degree candidates are welcome to apply as well
- Knowledgeable about clean energy and water technologies and/or markets, driven by a strong work ethic
- Some familiarity with technoeconomic modelling and financial modelling will be advantageous
- Ability to navigate and coordinate across diverse stakeholders, with strong people skills
- Creative, forward-looking, organised, with good attention to detail, and results-oriented
- Good communicator in both written and oral communication
- Passionate about creating positive, sustainable climate impact
